The Akosombo and Kpong dams’ planned water spills would no longer be carried out, according to the Volta River Authority (VRA).
This is because the circumstances that made the practice necessary have changed.
In a previous statement, the VRA warned residents downstream and along the dam’s banks to exercise caution since the two dams’ spill gates will soon be opened due to water levels that had risen over their capacity.
The safety of our dams is therefore not under danger, according to a statement from the VRA dated October 31, 2022, which also noted that “inflows into the Akosombo Reservoir have now receded to normal levels.”
“The projected leakage of water from the Akosombo and Kpong Dams will not take place, as previously indicated,” it continued. However, until the rainy season is finished, everyone who lives along the Volta River’s banks downstream of the two Dams must exercise caution.
The VRA stated that it will also keep an eye on the situation, collaborate with stakeholders, and provide updates should anything else change.
