UN grain ship departs Ukraine with grain for Ethiopia

The Horn of Africa, which is suffering from a drought, is being served by the first UN ship to depart Ukraine since the Russian invasion.

23,000 tonnes of wheat destined for Ethiopia were loaded onto the MV Brave Commander before it sailed out of the Black Sea port of Pivdennyi.

According to the UN’s World Food Programme, who prior to the war purchased more than half of its wheat from Ukraine, 345 million people in 82 countries are currently suffering from severe food insecurity and require immediate humanitarian assistance.

Since a deal to permit safe passage of ships was agreed on July 22, more than a dozen ships carrying grain have departed Ukraine.

Donations from the World Food Program, the US Agency for International Development, and a number of private contributors helped pay for the cargo carried by the Brave Commander.
