Netherlands’ Jeremie Frimpong still eligible to play for Ghana after not featuring at World Cup

The 22-year-old has been a revelation in the Bundesliga this season for Bayer Leverkusen and has been in imperious form.

Prior to joining the Netherlands for the World Cup, Frimpong scored five goals and gave three assists for the German team during the first half of the season.

However, coach Louis van Gaal preferred Denzel Dumfries in the right wing-back position, therefore he never got to kick a ball for the European team in Qatar.

The right-back is still qualified to represent Ghana because he did not represent the Netherlands in any competitive matches during the World Cup.

Frimpong, who has previously hinted that he doesn’t want to play for the Black Stars, was born to Dutch and Ghanaian parents.

In 2021, he admitted to the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf that the Netherlands is the only nation he wishes to represent.

Because I was born in the Netherlands, Frimpong stated last year, “I want to play for Orange (the Dutch national team).”

The defender joined Manchester City when he was nine years old and spent nearly ten years in the illustrious club’s academy.

Prior to securing a transfer to Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen in 2021, Frimpong first joined Scottish powerhouse Celtic in 2019.

Although he has already played for the Netherlands at the U-19 and U-20 levels, he has yet to represent the Oranje at the senior level.
