Sarkodie performs at BBC Radio 1Xtra’s Afrobeats Concerto

Sarkodie, one of a select group of artists chosen to perform at the Afrobeat Concerto, gave the evening power and vigor.

Afrobeats artists came together for the BBC Radio 1Xtra’s Afrobeat Concerto, a special concert featuring the BBC Philarmonic and Afrobeats musicians.

The BBC Philarmonic provided the backup vocals as the performers took the stage, and it was a phenomenal performance.

Sarkodie, who was the Ghanaian representative, gave a strong performance with his traditional interpretations of Rollies and Cigars and Lucky.

Maleek Berry, a London native and two-time Mobo nominee, Nigerian singer-songwriter CKay, Kenyan singer-songwriter Nikita Kering, and Finesse singer-songwriter Pheelz all gave special live performances at the show.

This is the first time a complete orchestra has performed an Afrobeats-focused concert in the UK. Afrobeats has experienced a surge in popularity, making its way onto music charts throughout the world and finding economic success.

This first-of-its-kind event, which also features The Compozers, was filmed at the BBC Philharmonic’s recording studio in Salford and commemorates 20 years of 1Xtra, the BBC radio network devoted to promoting Black music and culture.
