According to sources who spoke to ESPN, Paul Pogba’s older brother has been arrested by authorities in connection with a coordinated armed extortion campaign against the Juventus player.
In the early afternoon, Mathias Pogba “presented himself to the detectives and was taken into jail,” the source claimed.
Three additional persons are also being held, the source said. In France, temporary detention typically lasts for 24 hours.
The attempted organized extortion is the subject of an investigation launched by the Paris prosecutor’s office last month and being handled by anti-corruption police.
Prosecutors in France are looking into claims that Paul Pogba was the victim of extortion by his older brother Mathias and pals from their youth. They allegedly demanded the former Manchester United player pay them €13 million (almost $13 million).
The brother of Paul Pogba, Mathias Pogba, wishes “to emphasize strongly that he is a complete stranger to any extortion attempt,” according to Richard Arbib, Mathias Pogba’s attorney, who made this statement last week.
The issue gained attention after Mathias Pogba threatened to expose “explosive facts” about his brother and Kylian Mbappe of Paris Saint-Germain in a video and tweets.
According to reports, Paul Pogba told investigators the blackmailers claimed he asked a witch doctor to cast a spell on Mbappe in an effort to damage his reputation.
The accusation was refuted by Pogba, and Mbappe sided with the person who helped him win the 2018 World Cup.
Footballer Mathias Pogba, 32, also played for lower-level teams in England and other European nations throughout the most of his career.
