Patrice Evra: ‘I wish I played for Senegal instead of France’

The former defender, 41, has expressed his sorrow at selecting France over Senegal to play for the national team.

Evra made his remarks on a trip to Ghana where he met with President Nana Akufo-Addo.

He stated in an RMC-transcribed interview that if he could go back in time, he would have opted to represent Senegal rather than France. If you play and win, you are praised as a French person, but if the team loses, you are singled out as a Senegalese person. This younger generation needs to know that they can still be successful playing for their home nations. by GFFN

Due to post-World War Two labor laws that saw an influx of employees from French colonies to solve a labor shortage, it is no secret that many major stars and players on the French national team are of African descent.

Just to name a few, players with strong African heritage include Chelsea’s Ngolo Kante, Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba, and Kylian Mbappe.

The French team that won the 2018 World Cup consisted of 87% players with roots in African nations.

Evra was a player who met this description even though he was not a part of that winning campaign, and he has since urged for players to be true to their roots on the international stage in the modern day.

During his playing career, Evra was regarded as one of the top left-backs in the world and won numerous honors at the club level with teams like Manchester United and Juventus.

Prior to a contentious conclusion to his National team career, the Frenchman wasn’t quite able to achieve the same level of success with Les Blues.
