The Ashanti Regional Police are holding a male adult, whose identity is being suppressed, in connection with suspected fertilizer smuggling of large amounts intended for farmers.
A source at the Office informed GBC News in Kumasi of this.
According to the source, a joint Police-National Investigations Bureau (NIB) squad also impounded 500 bags of fertilizer intended for cocoa production.
The two security services in the Ashanti Region closely monitored the tip-off that led to the arrest.
As Achiase only served as a transit location, the allegedly illegal products were brought from Goaso in the Ahafo Region and stored in a few establishments there before being distributed to the targeted locations.
Around 10 a.m. on Friday, August 26, 2022, the joint Police-NIB squad pounced on the commodities. The suspect was then taken into custody and kept at the Kenyan District Police overnight before being moved to the Regional Headquarters for more investigations.
Unfinished structure at the front of the District Police Station had bags of items inside of it that were thought to be the seized fertilizers.
Police personnel on duty at the time of the visit, however, remained silent.
Additionally, it was reported that the Kenyan District Police Commander had traveled for a meeting.
When reached, the Regional Police Headquarters’ Public Relations Officer stated that he had not yet received a briefing on the subject.
