Galamsey: Chief, 3 ex-soldiers arrested at Kwahu (Video)

Three former soldiers and Nana Kofi Osei, the odikrom for Akwaboa in the Kwahu West Municipality of the Eastern Region, have been detained on suspicion of participating in galamsey.

The suspects were apprehended after a joint military-police operation with the assistance of the Assemblies (DISEC) at Kofi Dede along the River Pra.

According to reports, the concession was claimed by the Odikro and the ex-soldiers under the name TLG mining firm.

Other unauthorized workers at the mining site are alleged to have fled when they saw the operation team.

About 12 pieces of abandoned mining equipment, including excavators, were seized, and tents used by illegal miners as refuge were set on fire.

The miners have destroyed acres of vegetation and polluted the Pra river which some of the community members rely on.

In an interview with Adom News, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Kwawu South, Emmanuel Atta Ofori Snr, vowed that the struggle would not be abandoned.

Although the places are outside of his purview, he continued, he has partnered with Isaac Agyapong, chief executive of Kwawu East District, because it appears Kwawu West Municipality is not taking any effort to combat galamsey.

 

Isaac Agyapong, the District Chief Executive for Kwawu East, gave the inhabitants along the Pra River the assurance that they should have faith in them because starting now, they will deal with the illegal miners in the region who are ruining water bodies.

In addition, Nana Tenkorang Adarkwa, chief of Kwawu Praso, claimed that due to the galamsey activities in the region, they are unable to even get water for agriculture.

Therefore, he requested assistance from the authorities in the galamsey war.
