Commercial sex worker remanded over human trafficking

A commercial sex worker was remanded into police custody by an Accra Circuit Court on suspicion of human trafficking.

Regarding both attempted and actual human trafficking, Miriam Braim entered a not guilty plea. On November 29, 2022, she will appear in court once more.

The only person who knows her identity is Mary, and she is on the run.

The complainant was a casual worker, while the accused, Miriam, was a commercial sex worker, according to Police Chief Inspector Isaac Anquandah, who testified before the court presided over by Madam Kizita Naa Koowa Quarshie.

According to him, the complainant and the accused are both Nigerians who reside in Ghana. In December 2021, the accused and Mary, a friend of the accused who is now living in Nigeria, traveled to Ghana to engage in prostitution.

According to the prosecution, after spending three months together in Kasoa, Ghana, Mary and Miriam had a disagreement and decided to go their own ways. Mary returned to Nigeria, but Miriam stayed in Ghana and moved to Mempeasem in East Legon.

The victim, Mutia Osman, was allegedly recruited and conveyed to Ghana by Mary in Nigeria. According to the report, the accused person met the victim on Saturday, October 1, 2022, and took her home.

According to testimony given in court, the accused sought to utilize the victim as a prostitute but was rejected when the victim claimed that she was just 18 years old and a virgin.

According to the prosecution, the defendant reportedly spent two days out on the town with the victim, having sex with her for pay.

According to the report, the victim felt threatened on the second day of their excursion and jumped into a private car, which took her to the East Legon Police Station, where she filed a police report.

According to the prosecution, on October 7 and 22, police apprehended the victim after accompanying her to the accused’s home.

The Anti-Human Trafficking Unit at the Headquarters later received the file, and after conducting an investigation, the accused was charged.
