When terrorists stormed the eastern portion of the local government on Saturday night and drove out many residents, over 50 locals in the Damari towns of Birnin-Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna State were kidnapped.
In a statement released by its chairman, Ishaq Usman Kasai, the Birnin-Gwari Emirate Progressives’ Union (BEPU) said that for the past five days, it has been warning the public and the appropriate authorities about the vicious, evil, and heartless attacks carried out by terrorists in Damari as a result of Ansaru, a Boko Haram offshoot, leaving the region.
“The unfortunate occurrence in the past 72 hours has reached a disastrous scenario in Damari town of Kazage Ward in the Eastern section of Birnin-Gwari Local Government Area Kaduna State,” he stated.
As of Saturday, “bandits encircled Damari and abducted about 50 people, shortly before and after troops from Military field-base from Dogon-Dawa went to the town and escorted some remnants of the residents who were willing to move to comfort zones in neighboring communities and even as far away as Zaria,” the author explained.
“The most worrying incident occurred when a pregnant woman was escaping with her coworkers and was abandoned by the fleeing groups, where she collapsed and gave birth to a boy.
Sadly, the mother and the infant both passed away instantly.
He stated that “Damari is believed to be the largest town in the entire Eastern section of Birnin-Gwari and with this worrying trend, approximately 20 thousand inhabitants, including Women and Children, are rendered internally displaced (IDPs).”
“Even today, the bandits returned to the town unopposed, burned a vehicle, kidnapped dozens, intercepted and mistreated people, a severe development that indicates the level of serious insecurity scenario facing our community,” the statement reads.
The people of Damari, an agricultural hamlet that annually generated over 600 tonnes of maize grains, have left their ancestral homes and farms in search of safety due to the devastating atrocities of bandits.
BEPU is extremely worried about the deplorable situation facing Birnin-Gwari LGA residents, especially those living in local villages where efforts to get higher authorities to take action in accordance with their constitutional obligations have failed.
“BEPU is deeply sympathetic to all the people of Damari in their tribulations and assures them of continued efforts to support them in all possible ways, particularly in humanitarian emergency needs, and would never relent on advancing engagement with Government, whose major and primary responsibility as enshrined in the Constitution is the protection of lives and properties of the citizenry, to do the necessary.”
