  • Africa is known for its abundant vegetation cover, which supplies food, firewood, herbs and timber, among many other things. Bitter Kola has been one of the most treasured trees for centuries because of its medicinal value. By the mention of its name, one can tell that it has a bitter taste, but those who know its benefits do not mind the taste.

Bitter kola contains about 2 percent of caffeine and is bitter when eaten fresh. Experts say that when dry, bitter kola has a less bitter taste and could smell like nutmeg.

In this article, I’ll highlight 5 reasons why you should chew bitter cola often.

1. *Toxin removal from the body* : Toxins enter the body through the air we breathe or the foods we eat. If these poisons are not removed, they might build up and cause health problems in the future.

Bitter cola can be utilized to cleanse the body system effectively. To do so, peel some bitter cola seeds and boil them in a kettle. Add water to taste, then strain the liquid into a flask after it has fully boiled. Every morning, drink it warm.

2. *Blood sugar reduction:* Bitter cola also helps to lower blood sugar levels. Carbohydrates are the most widely consumed food type on the planet.

3) *Bitter Kola Fights Infections*

Bitter kola has been used as a remedy to treat infections such as hepatitis and the flu. According to a recent study in 2018, bitter kola helps to treat coughs, bacterial, and viral infections.

4) It *is an antibacterial*

The bitter kola plant is enriched with antibacterial properties since the nuts seeds and leaves contain them. Bitter kola was tested against streptococcuspyogenes, staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Salmonella typhi, and the plant was able to inhibit the microorganisms successfully. The antibacterial activity is believed to be due to bioactive components in bitter kola extracts such as saponins and tannin.

5) *Anti-malaria*

According to scientists, chemical constituents in bitter kola have anti-malarial properties. Additionally, the stem, bark, and seeds of bitter kola are used to treat acute fever, inflammation of the respiratory tract and throat infections.
